Best Tool to Insert MKV video into PowerPoint 2016

"PowerPoint couldn't insert a movie from the selected file. Either the file is non-standard, or QuickTime is not properly installed." Many people encountered error message when they tried to insert MKV file into PowerPoint slide, no matter PowerPoint version is 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003 or 2000. Things could get even worse, you successfully embed a MKV movie in PowerPoint, but you still get a "Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported" message when you play the video during a presentation.

Let us look at PowerPoint supported formats:

Video: In PowerPoint 2013 and later, for the best video playback experience, we recommend that you use .mp4 files encoded with H.264 video (a.k.a. MPEG-4 AVC) and AAC audio. In PowerPoint 2010, we recommend that you use .wmv files.

Audio: We recommend using .m4a files encoded with AAC audio.

As you see, PowerPoint including PowerPoint 2016 doesn’t support MKV. A web search for "video converter" or "audio converter" will show you numerous converters that are available, many of which are free, such as the Pavtube Video Converter You can use a search engine or go to the Windows Store. Choose one that looks reliable to you, and download it to your PC. Mac user get the Pavtube Video Converter for Mac.

Open the converter on your PC. Tell the converter the directory location of the file you want to convert. (The converter will leave the original file untouched and create a new file in the format you prescribe. See the format options in the next section.)
